Dubravka Zarkov, born in Zrenjanin, former Yugoslavia, in 1958. Ph.D. from Radboud University Nijmegen. Associate Professor in Gender, Conflict and Development at Institute of Social Studies/Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Fellow (1 February 2012 - 30 June 2012)

CINEMATIC REPRESENTATIONS OF SELF AND OTHER: WAR MOVIES AND ONTOLOGIES OF NON-RECOGNITION

I was a member and a coordinator of the Theme Group "The Real and the Imagined in Contemporary Balkans". The umbrella project analysed social, political, cultural and symbolic dynamics of contemporary life in the ex-Yugoslav successor states and their communication with Europe and the Globe. My individual project examined British, Dutch and the USA cinema and TV production about war in Bosnia, focusing on representations of 'local' Bosnian population, in comparison to the 'nationals'. I also engaged in critical reflections on international law, which was not part of my initial plans. During the stay at NIAS, I co-organized two international seminars; prepared a chapter for an edited book where all group members contributed. I plan to co-edit a special issue of a journal where I will co-write Introduction and contribute an article. I also participated at an international conference. Some of the work I did at NIAS will be presented in future at guest lectures and conferences.
