HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF PROSECUTING IRISH REPUBLICAN ACTIVISTS, 1917-2000

The most important aspect of the work I did during my stay at NIAS was no doubt the activities in relation to the Research Theme Group: "Terrorists on Trial. The Court Room as a Stage in the Struggle for Publicity, Public Support and Legitimacy", which I coordinated. I have researched and written my own contribution to the joint volume we are producing about four trials of I.R.A. men and women in the early 1970s. These will also be included in a monograph I have started to work on about hunger strikes as a political weapon in Ireland.

In addition I have written a good few articles and jointly edited two books, one of which: Nation and Region. Nation-Building, Regional Identities and Separatism in Nineteenth-Century Europe, will be published by Palgrave this year. The other one deals with the concept of political religion and will hopefully appear somewhere next year.
