MORAL EMOTIONS IN THE DESIGN PROCESS OF RISKY TECHNOLOGIES

My NIAS fellowship served as a bridge between my NWO-VENI and VIDI projects on risk and emotion. At NIAS I worked on “Moral Emotions in the Design Process of Risky Technologies”. This has resulted in papers on emotional engineers; on aesthetics as a risk factor in architecture; on risk communication, emotions and climate change; and on the ethics of infant feeding policies. These papers have been or will soon be submitted to international journals, and I have presented them at various conferences. I negotiated a contract for a “Handbook of Risk Theory” (forthcoming in 2011) with Springer, for which I am editor in chief, and for which my co-editors and I recruited more than 40 international top authors. I wrote up a monograph, based on the work I had done over previous years and for my Ph.D., entitled “Moral Emotions and Intuitions” which will be published in 2011 by Palgrave Macmillan.
