THE MODERN AND POSTMODERN AUGUSTINE

As NIAS Fellow I was involved in two related research projects. I was a co-leader of the Theme Group "The Modern and Postmodern Reception of Augustine from 1600 to 2000", which in turn is connected to an international research project, the "Oxford Guide to the Historical Reception of Augustine", an investigation into the appropriation of Augustine in cultural history from 430 until the present day, to be published by Oxford University Press in 2011. As one of the editors I wrote seven lemmata, edited 12 contributions by others, and finished the survey article, "Augustine and Modern Literature", that will be part of a companion volume to the "Guide". As a member of NIAS Theme Group, I wrote four longer articles on the appropriation of Augustine by modern authors, viz. T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, J.M. Coetzee, and Ezra Pound. Together with other material I was able to collect during the year in connection to the reception of Augustine, this will result in a monograph in the near future. I also finished two other articles and a conference paper on Ezra Pound , another article on Eliot for the OSL-OLITH Research Group "Modernism", and an introduction to a collection of essays on Literary Utopias.
