Petr Sgall

Petr Sgall, born in České Budĕjovice, Czech Republic, in 1926. Ph.D. from Charles University, Prague. Professor of Theoretical and Computational Linguistics at Charles University, Prague.

Fellow (1 September 1990 - 30 June 1991)

During my stay I wrote my part of the book Czech without embellishment on colloquial Czech, its relationships to Standard Czech and the nature of code switching between the two varieties. I continued my studies of topic, focus (functional sentence perspective) in Czech, English and German, also in connection with issues of discourse patterns, and I worked on further research in the domain of comparing dependency syntax with descriptions based on constituency.
