FAQ

Should the applicant from a non-Dutch university attach the letter of recommendation to the application himself/herself, or should the referee send the letter of recommendation directly to NIAS?
The application procedure states that the letter by a professional referee should be attached to the application. However, if you prefer your referee to send the letter directly to NIAS please advise to do so. The letter should be sent digitally to Application@nias.knaw.nl stating the name of the applicant in the subject field.
The application procedure states that the supporting letter for an application by a scholar from a non-Dutch university should be by an internationally known scholar affiliated with a Dutch university or research institute. I do not know such a scholar. Is this a requirement?
This is a requirement indeed.
What is the best way to send the supporting letter? As a pdf-document or a paper version?
The letter should be sent digitally. So either a pdf or a Word document is fine.
I am a Dutch national working at a non-Dutch university. Should I apply for a fellowship for Dutch scholars or for non-Dutch scholars?
It is the affiliation that matters. So a Dutch national affiliated with a university outside the Netherlands should apply as a non-Dutch scholar. A non-Dutch national affiliated with a Dutch university should apply for a fellowship for Dutch scholars.
The full description of the research project should be no more than 1,500 words. How strict is this requirement?

I have just completed a manuscript for a new book or article. Is it better to send the manuscript instead of publications?
Only publications should be added to the application. Manuscripts will not be accepted.
I would like to apply for a NIAS Fellowship in order to work together with a professor at a Dutch university. Is it necessary to be residential at NIAS?

I am currently finishing my Ph.D. degree. Can I apply for a regular NIAS Fellowship now?

  • Applicants for regular NIAS Fellowships for non-Dutch scholars: in September, five months after the application deadline
