Goudsblom, J.

Johan Goudsblom, born in Bergen, the Netherlands, in 1932. Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam. Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam
Guest of the Rector (Winter 1999-2000)
During my three-month stay as a Guest of the Rector at NIAS I made a start with each of the three projects I intended to work on. I wrote a six page synopsis in English of my book Het regime van de tijd [The Time Regime] which I submitted to two American publishers. I began collecting notes and ideas for a book with the provisional title A History of Inequality. And I collected a great deal of material for a comparative historical-sociological study of fire use, fire hazards, and fire prevention in various cultural areas, focusing on possible divergences between the developments in Europe and elsewhere. In addition, I wrote an article on Fire: Human Uses and Consequences for the International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences, and three articles for publication in Dutch scholarly journals: on biological evolution and socio-cultural development, on moral regimes, and a review article of Randall Collins' The Sociology of Philosophies
