Uhlenbeck Lecture 2012: Metaphor and Metropolis
Nancy Stieber, Art Historian and former NIAS Fellow (2007/8), will hold the annual Uhlenbeck Lecture. On 30 May 2012 she will talk about the metaphores we use to make sense of the modern city.

Eberhard König has held the annual KB Lecture on 19 January 2012. He received the first copy of the accompanying publication, "Devotion from Dawn to Dusk".

Seminar – Economic Growth in an Era of Dollar and Euro-crisis: African Perspectives
African economies continue to grow, despite the financial crisis in Europe and North America. In a seminar on 26 January Erik Baehre, Austin Onuoha, Elijah Taiwo and Enoch Aboh will discuss the current crisis from an African point of view.

Seminar - From Social Pain to Borderline Personality Disorder and Beyond
Social rejection and exclusion hurt. In a seminar on 24 January, psychologists Maurits van der Molen and Arnoud Arntz will discuss the nature of social pain, particularly in relation to Borderline Personality Disorder.

KB Lecture: Devotion from Dawn to Dusk
On January 19th Eberhard König will deliver the annual KB Lecture at the Royal Library in The Hague. The German art historian and medievalist will present his research on Books of Hours.

Seminar - Resolving Disputes in Complex International Financing Transactions
On Thursday 12 January at 11.00h, David Baragwanath, HUGO fellow 2011/12, will hold a seminar about the legal uncertainties in present day international financing transactions.
Henk Barendregt is the Distinguished Lorentz Fellow 2012/13
Henk Barendregt, Professor of Foundations of Mathematics and Computer Science at Radboud University Nijmegen, wins the fourth Distinguished Lorentz Fellowship. At NIAS, Barendregt will explore the discrepancy between human perception, commonly perceived as continuous, versus the actual discrete underlying mechanisms. This will also be the topic of his interdisciplinary workshop at the Lorentz Center.

Seminar - The Digital Humanities Paradox
On Thursday 8 December 2011, at 16.30h Jan-Christoph Meister from Hamburg University will hold a seminar in which he will present a talk entitled ‘the DH paradox - A modest proposal concerning the relation between digital and analog conceptualizations of human artefacts’
